Four in a row for NSW men, Victoria spoil their party

NSW celebrate after a record fourth consecutive National Championship

NSW men are now undefeated in four years at the National Championships, after comfortably taking out this year’s main prize in Perth.

The blues had an easy path into the final with wins over Victoria, South Australia and then Queensland in the semi-final. In the final though, Victoria surprised the agile team coached by former National team wing Russell Garnett, who was also known for his lightning speed.

Victoria, led by the experienced left-back Vella Vujaklija, pushed NSW for most of the match and with 15 minutes left in play, took a two-goal lead. NSW though lifted the pace of the game once again, quickly taking control.  In the closing minutes of the game, the tiring defence of Victoria had trouble holding back player of the tournament Kenneth Toerlen, and junior star Luka Krajnc who hit back with a barrage of fast breaks for NSW.  In the end NSW winning 32:28 (13:13 at the break).

Victoria spoil NSW's hopes of a clean sweep

In the Women’s tournament Victoria spoilt NSW’s hopes of claiming a clean sweep of National titles this year, with a decisive 18:14 win. NSW was in line to take all of this year’s championships, with straight wins in all junior tournaments for both boys and girls.

Caitlin Wynne made a come-back to the nationals with strong performances for Victoria but their key player in the final was goalkeeper Vera Ignajtovic who frustrated the usually effective NSW attack, with a high percantage of saves.  For NSW, left-handed right-back Daniella dos Santos stood out, leading the scoring with impressive long range shots. She was well supported all round by a fast NSW side and especially by former national team pivot Allira Hudson-Gofers.

NSW now has 12 months to regain the title they won from Victoria in 2008.
