Canberra gearing up to host Australian championship

Canberra is set to make its mark on the international handball stage as it prepares to host the highly anticipated 2023 Oceania Handball Club Championship, for men and women. From 25 to 30 July 2023, handball clubs and enthusiasts from all over Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and New Caledonia will gather in Canberra for the largest handball tournament in Oceania.

The annual event will take place at the Australian Institute of Sport in Bruce and The Dome in Fadden. These state-of-the-art facilities will provide the perfect backdrop for teams to showcase their skills and compete for the title of Oceania’s best handball club.

One of the main highlights of the championship is the opportunity for the winning team to secure a spot in the prestigious IHF Super Globe tournament. This global event brings together club champions from all continental regions, providing a platform for the world’s best clubs to compete for the ultimate title. By qualifying for the IHF Super Globe, the Oceania champions will have the chance to represent their region and make a mark on the world handball stage.

With its world-class facilities and commitment to sporting excellence, the capital city is ready to welcome participants and spectators from across Oceania. This marks the first time that Canberra has been chosen as the host city for the Oceania Handball Club Championship.

Hosting this tournament for the next four years provides Canberra with a unique chance to shine a spotlight on its local handball community. It also offers an excellent platform to promote the city’s tourism, hospitality, and sporting infrastructure.

The capital city will be represented by the Canberra Handball Club which will feature a team in both the men’s and women’s categories. A chance to build on their impressive performances from last year’s tournament in Gold Coast, where the Canberra Women’s club won a silver medal, while the men’s team brought home the bronze.

In March the Canberra Handball Club hosted Sydney Uni, Saint Kilda and University of Queensland handball clubs for a the 2023 Canberra Cup. The tournament served as an invaluable opportunity for the Canberra Handball community to test their readiness for the big event.
